Joe Valente was born on March 16, 1982 in Ukiah, Ca, a small farming town in rural California. Shortly after his birth it was apparent that he had a critical congenital heart defect as he was an extremly blue baby. He was transported to University of California San Francisco.
At two days old Joe had is first open heart surgery to place a transannular patch to widen is severly stenotic right ventricular outflow tract. The surgery was the first tansannular patch as the first stage of a repair performed by his cardiothoracic surgeon at UCSF,
